Our general concern is that patient safety is sacrificed at the risk of unnecessarily prolonging life. Two studies suggest that reducing the number of leads in a pacemaker is potentially hazardous, and a third study suggests that multiple device implants are potentially hazardous. The area of safety regarding potential hazards has been poorly addressed in the literature. The most salient arguments are examined in regard to each of these issues. Relevant literature was searched using MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar to find relevant articles published since 2004. The three issues examined are: (1) diagnosing patients, (2) end of life, and (3) risks of multiple device implants.
